The Mississippi state legislature established the Mississippi Lottery in 2018 after a contentious senate vote. Lawmakers decided to approve the lottery after realizing its potential to generate millions in revenue for state programs.
Tickets sales launched late in 2019 with scratch-off games. Since then, the lottery’s portfolio includes Mega Millions, Powerball, Cash 3, Cash 4, Match 5, and Cash Pop.
Profits from ticket sales benefit infrastructure and education in the state. Until June 30, 2028, the first $80 million in lottery proceeds per fiscal year will be to be used for transportation improvements. Additional funds will then be directed into the Educational Enhancement Fund.
Lottery prizes in Mississippi are subject to both state and federal taxes, and the Mississippi Lottery withholds a percentage of certain lottery winnings for tax purposes. Check our Tax Information section for more details.
You have 180 days from the date of the draw to claim prizes.
Through June 2028, lottery proceeds of up to $80 million will go toward infrastructural needs throughout the state. After $80 million, additional profits will go toward the state's Education Enhancement Fund, benefiting the Early Childhood Learning Collaborative and Classroom Supply Fund.
